Deuteronomy 4:6 (KJV) God’s Law as Protection, Not Restriction
God’s Law as Protection, Not Restriction
(Deuteronomy 4 Study)
“Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding…”
Deuteronomy 4:6 (KJV)
================================
When people hear the word “law,” they often think of limitation.
Rules.
Restrictions.
Things they cannot do.
But in Deuteronomy chapter four, Moses presents a different perspective.
God’s law was not given to control His people—
It was given to protect them.
“Keep therefore and do them…”
Why?
Because these commands would become their wisdom and understanding.
This reveals a powerful truth.
God’s commands are not barriers—
They are boundaries that protect your life.
Israel was about to enter a land filled with different cultures.
Different beliefs.
Different practices.
Many of those practices would lead to destruction.
Idolatry.
Corruption.
Moral compromise.
So God gave them His law.
Not to limit their freedom—
But to preserve their identity.
Because true freedom is not the absence of boundaries.
It is the presence of right direction.
And this still applies today.
We often see God’s instructions as restrictions.
We ask:
“Why can’t I do this?”
“Why does God say no to that?”
But what if those boundaries are not taking something from you—
What if they are protecting something in you?
Your peace.
Your purpose.
Your identity.
Your future.
Because God sees what we cannot see.
He understands the consequences we often overlook.
And His commands are designed to guide us toward life—not away from it.
Israel’s obedience would make them stand out among the nations.
People would look at them and say:
“This is a wise and understanding people.”
Because living according to God’s word produces a life that reflects His wisdom.
And that is the goal.
Not restriction.
But protection.
