Severe flooding struck Iligan City and nearby areas in Mindanao following relentless rainfall brought by Tropical Storm Basyang (international name: Penha), leaving communities submerged, roads impassable, and residents scrambling for safety.

Despite periods of little to no rainfall in some locations, river systems connected across Mindanao rapidly swelled—catching many residents off guard. Authorities confirmed that continuous overnight downpours caused rivers to overflow, carrying massive debris including logs, bamboo, and household waste into low-lying communities.

According to weather monitors, Surigao del Sur experienced strong winds, heavy rain, and lightning as the storm made its presence felt Thursday evening, February 5, 2026. Wind Signal No. 2 remains hoisted over several provinces as Basyang is expected to make landfall in the coming hours.
