The Heart Behind the Commandments

“Oh that there were such an heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always…”

In Deuteronomy chapter five, God repeats the Ten Commandments.

But then—

He reveals something deeper.

Not about the law…

But about the heart.

“Oh that there were such an heart in them…”

This is not the voice of a distant ruler.

This is the voice of a God who desires relationship.

Because the commandments were never meant to be followed mechanically.

They were meant to be lived relationally.

This reveals a powerful truth.

God is not just looking for obedience—
He is looking for a willing heart.

You can follow rules externally…

And still be far internally.

You can do the right things…

But for the wrong reasons.

Fear.

Obligation.

Pressure.

But that is not what God desires.

He wants a heart that wants Him.

A heart that chooses Him.

A heart that trusts Him.

Because true obedience flows from love.

Not force.

Not fear.

Not performance.

This is why Jesus later summarized the commandments into one truth:

Love God.

Love others.

Because when love is present—

Obedience becomes natural.

Not perfect.

But genuine.

And this is where many people struggle today.

They see God’s commands as pressure.

As expectation.

As something heavy.

But what if the problem is not the command—

What if it is the heart behind it?

Because when the heart is aligned—

The command is no longer a burden.

It becomes a response.

A response to love.

A response to grace.

A response to relationship.

God was not asking Israel for perfection.

He was asking for devotion.

And that is still the call today.

Examine your motives
Why do you follow God?

Pursue relationship
Know God, not just His rules.

Choose love over obligation
Let love guide your obedience.

Stay connected daily
Relationship grows through consistency.

Allow God to shape your heart
Transformation begins inside.

Obedience without heart—

Becomes empty.

But obedience with heart—

Becomes life.

PRAYER

Lord, give me a heart that truly desires You.
Help me follow You not out of obligation, but out of love.
Align my motives and guide my actions.
Let my obedience reflect my relationship with You.
Amen.
